Carnival Boycotts today
To combine in abstaining from, or preventing dealings with, as a means of intimidation or coercion:
To refuse to have dealings with (a person, organization, etc) or refuse to buy (a product) as a protest or means of coercion
I think the most important words here are intimidation and coercion.
For it was a boycott that was applied against Deal Carnival Association back in year 2000 by the Association of Kent Carnival Organizations (AKCO) and sadly still exists today by a few Carnival Organizations namely Sittingbourne, Herne Bay, Whitstable, Hornsey, Bexhill and Basildon.
Why was the boycott put against Deal, this I think was mainly because we did not believe that a voluntary organization such as AKCO, should tell us who we could invite to our Carnival, what our Court should wear etc., because of this Deal resigned from AKCO and they duly implemented a boycott, with many offensive actions and allegations.
Does a boycott work? I do not believe so, for as all know; Deal has gone from strength to strength to be one of the best Carnivals in the South East, this due from the support of the Town Council, the people of Deal and the Carnival Committee. Those Associations which were the ring leaders of the boycott, Broadstairs, Westgate, Dover, Birchington, Ash and Canterbury are sadly no more.
So when a boycott is operated against Deal I will try and fight it with humor and ridicule for this surely will show how ineffective and self destructive it is.
